San Francisco, Calif. (September 11, 1996) -- Imation Corp. (NYSE:IMN), the new imaging and information company recently spun-off from 3M, and Scitex Corporation Ltd. (NASDAQ:SCIXF) today announced a joint agreement to develop a new high-quality dry film technology. Scitex, based in Herzlia, Israel, is developing a new family of dry film imagesetters that will use Imation dry film, which is expected to be commercially available in the first half of 1997. "This is a significant step in the development of a technology that promises to have a tremendous impact in the marketplace," said Chuck Oesterlein, vice president, Imation Printing and Publishing Systems. "Scitex has extensive expertise in the development of top-quality imagesetting equipment and they represent an excellent technology partner for Imation. This also demonstrates Imation's firm commitment to the ongoing evolution of conventional products and technologies, which we will continue to support for many years." Commercial printers, quick printers, digital trade shops and originators can realize substantial benefits from the use of an environmentally friendly dry film system, including increased productivity, the elimination of "wet chemistry" processing and decreased costs. Imation already has a successful history in dry film for the medical imaging industry. The company's DryView™ Laser Imaging Systems revolutionized medical imaging technology with its 1995 introduction. This innovative technology uses a unique film-development process that completely eliminates wet processing chemistry. It offers radiology departments more siting flexibility, and enables them to save money, eliminate chemical waste handling, and increase productivity. More than 1,000 DryView systems have been shipped and installed in various locations worldwide. Dry film provides rapid photo speed and improved consistency, since a more predictable dot can be obtained without the variables of light exposure and chemical processing. In addition to savings in storage and floor space, plumbing is not required, which means dry processing equipment can be conveniently located in a typical office environment. Imation announced its intention to develop a dry film product at the DRUPA show in Germany in May 1995. It also demonstrated its expertise in chemistry-free prepress technology at the 1995 Graph Expo show in Chicago, where Imation dry film was used to image negative-acting "no-process" plates. Since that time, Imation has been active in developing cooperative relationships with imagesetter manufacturers in order to bring cost-effective dry film systems to their customers. "The cooperation between Scitex and Imation will revolutionize the purchasing practices of those seeking imagesetting solutions," said Scitex Vice President Dr. Michael Nagler. "The graphic arts industry, and particularly commercial printers, digital trade services and originators, will benefit from this new line of products." In August, Scitex and Imation announced plans to integrate the Realist™ print engine developed by Iris Graphics, a Scitex company, as a component in Imation's new of Rainbow™ Model 4700 digital proofing system. The new digital proofer will be marketed by Imation and is expected to be available during the first quarter of 1997.
